These days, there’s a lot of nostalgia for the 1980s and 1990s. You can see it in the clothes, the television reboots, the music, the cultural references being dropped in media and everyday conversation. Well, here at Mountain House, we’re getting in on this trend in a major way with a throwback of our own: our freshly unveiled Mountain House Classic line!
Mind you, this wasn’t just a random jump on the bandwagon: Mountain House Classics meals are here on account of legit popular demand. These freeze-dried feasts in their vintage getup are a chance for any Mountain House fan to celebrate our history, indulge in a little retro spirit on your next fishing or backpacking trip, and satisfy an outdoors-inspired appetite with some truly timeless flavors.
Now, it’s entirely your choice if you want to savor these delicious oldies-but-goodies while rocking a perm, Walkman, boombox, sleeveless sweatshirt, and/or leggings. And it’s also entirely your choice whether you want to share photographic evidence of said getup with us. We’d love to feature some old-school looks—‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, whatever—over our Mountain House social-media channels, just saying.
Our Classics Comeback
What exactly is our Mountain House Classic collection? Well, it’s a lineup of old-school Mountain House meals representing the original recipes and—compared with our modern Adventure Meals™ series—presented in larger pouches offering more servings. (For example, our Classic version of Mountain House Biscuits & Gravy is 3 servings, compared to the 2 servings its Adventure Meals™ counterpart comes in.)
Like the ingredients and the serving size, the packaging on these Mountain House Classic meals intentionally nods to the designs of decades past, giving those beefed-up pouches an irresistible, rather kitschy throwback look.
We decided to roll out this Classic line based on the desire of some of our longtime, loyal customers to see—and, naturally, eat—some of their bygone Mountain House favorites again. We’re always listening to our Mountain House community, and the introduction (reintroduction?) of our Classic series is a case in point we’re mighty excited about.
To be clear, these Classics aren’t replacing the Adventure Meals™ products that evolved from them, but are being offered alongside as a fun—maybe memory-evoking—alternative. And they stem from the very same, tried-and-true proprietary freeze-drying process that has made our reputation for all these decades, and which comes backed up by our famous Mountain House Taste Guarantee.
Mountain House Classic Assortments
How about we do a little meet-and-greet with the Mountain House Classic meals we’re bringing out of retirement, so to speak, to tempt your tastebuds once again? (We recommend cranking up some Debbie Gibson, Whitesnake, Run DMC—hey, maybe the Top Gun soundtrack?—while getting to know these iconic products. But you do you.)

Straight-shooting, heartwarming deliciousness is what this Mountain House Classic delivers with its buttermilk biscuits served with pork sausage in creamy gravy. Chef’s-kiss kind of good, especially around a campfire...
Our Classic Beef Stroganoff With Noodles combines ground beef and egg noodles in a (ridiculously tasty) savory mushroom cream sauce. Nostalgia’s never tasted this good.
Just like it did back in the day, our Classic Breakfast Skillet will get the whole bedraggled crew out of the tents or the camper in a jiffy. That’s thanks to the aroma of hash browns and scrambled eggs mixed together with pork sausage patty, peppers, and onions.
After a full day on the trail or on the water, our Classic Chili Mac With Beef is just what the doctor ordered. It’s a mouthwatering blend of ground beef, kidney beans, and elbow macaroni in a hearty and spicy sauce with thoroughly timeless appeal.

Mountain House’s Proud History
This Mountain House Classic line is partly a nod to our long history providing convenient, nourishing, and toothsome freeze-dried meals for outdoor pursuits of every kind as well as emergency preparedness. We’ve been doing just that since 1969 (“Summer of ‘69,” anyone?). In that momentous year, our parent company Oregon Freeze Dry—now OFD Foods LLC—partnered with REI to provide to outdoorspeople freeze-dried meals of the style that OFD had been supplying to the U.S. military.
We’re honored to have fed so many hikers, backpackers, campers, hunters, anglers, climbers, river runners, and other adventurers over all of these years—and to continue helping folks prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies with great-tasting freeze-dried food boasting an unbeatable shelf life.
